Age Suitability and Families Compliance

Last updated: October 12, 2026

This page summarizes how Samio Learning protects children ages 4 to 12 while aligning with Google Play Families, COPPA, and EU privacy expectations. It also explains how Askimo, our Wikipedia-curiosities app for children from age 4, follows the same rules.

Audience and key experiences

- Target audience: children ages 4–12 with light caregiver supervision. - Core activities: creative studio drawing, math/reading/clock missions, badge rewards, optional reminders. - Monetization: none. The app ships without ads or in-app purchases. - Sensitive permissions: network access for content plus photo-library access to save artwork; the advertising ID permission is removed in the release build.

Compliance snapshot

- Age declaration: pending Play Console review to lock the 4–12 bracket. - Content suitability: in progress, creative team reviewing all assets. - Advertising and payments: satisfied—no ad SDKs or purchase flows. - Data transparency: privacy policy drafted; needs to be hosted and linked in-app. - Parental gating: verify adult gates around outbound links, support, and data settings. - Families self-certification: questionnaire still to file. - Device testing: schedule QA runs on recent Android tablet and phone.

Data handling and SDK posture

- Firebase Analytics stays disabled until a guardian grants consent; console settings will keep Google Signals and ad personalisation off. - Expo Notifications default to off; reminders only trigger after adult confirmation and include an always-available toggle. - Media access uses Android 13+ granular permissions and clarifies that only images are saved. - The Samio Learning API device identifier is random; add a parent reset button before launch. - Progress, drawings, and preferences live in local storage; document schemas so deletion requests are straightforward.

Parental controls and legal flow

- Support, privacy, and notification areas will sit behind a simple adult check. - The privacy policy link will appear in the caregiver menu and on the Play Store listing. - Any future optional collection (for example aggregated analytics) will only activate after verifiable consent. - Version history and policy changes will be logged for auditors.

Askimo: age suitability

- Askimo is our second app: Wikipedia curiosities for children, shown as questions ("Who is…?", "What is…?") with a child-friendly summary, read aloud in 7 languages. - Audience: children from age 4 to 12. Pre-readers use the Listen button; the youngest should have a grown-up nearby. App Store: Kids category, rated 4+ (Education). Free. - Content: summaries come from Wikipedia and pass a child-safety word filter; anything the filter rejects is replaced by a short explanation instead of the text. Wikipedia text is CC BY-SA 4.0. - No account, no advertising, no in-app purchases, and no analytics or tracking SDKs. The app only talks to Wikipedia (content) and a text-to-speech service (the words to read aloud) — never anything about the child. - Every link that leaves the app — a Wikipedia page, Wikipedia's donation page, the Samio Learning store page — sits behind a grown-up check, every single time, as the Kids category requires. - Reminders are optional and local to the device: off until the system permission is granted, and only asked for after the first content appears.
